thank you J.

i did come across that article on ArtOfManliness after a quick search on DuckDuckGo and i will follow it as a guide.

a friend of mine from the Renaissance Festival circuit appears to be a master whittler. his humility prevents him from admitting this but his work says so. he has made bowls, spoons, forks and other handheld items and he is working on something every time i cross him out on the path.

i intend to be like this friend of mine.

I am reminded of the old joke:

Q: How do you make a statue of an elephant?

A: Start with a block of stone, and chip away anything that doesn't look like an elephant.

What I'm saying is that I have no idea, but this article seems to provide some good starting points. I like the "duct tape on the thumb" trick, although I recommend gaffer tape instead.

It's easiest to learn the basics with bars of cheap soap because they're soft and have no grain to fight.

i have been intending to get more involved in woodworking for a while now. recently, i have become insterested in the specific sub-category of woodworking that is whittling. it seems fun, useful and minimalist...unlike more advanced projects which require table saws and other such nerga.

who would be able to recommend resources for how to start, tools, tutorials?
