i did come across that article on ArtOfManliness after a quick search on DuckDuckGo and i will follow it as a guide.

a friend of mine from the Renaissance Festival circuit appears to be a master whittler. his humility prevents him from admitting this but his work says so. he has made bowls, spoons, forks and other handheld items and he is working on something every time i cross him out on the path.

i intend to be like this friend of mine.

What I'm saying is that I have no idea, but this article seems to provide some good starting points.  I like the "duct tape on the thumb" trick, although I recommend gaffer tape instead.

It's easiest to learn the basics with bars of cheap soap because they're soft and have no grain to fight.
